Sarnies’ story in Singapore begins with Australian ex-finance professional Benjamin Lee. After many years in the banking industry, Ben dove in headfirst into the restaurant world. After years of harboring a dream of owning a sandwich restaurant, he opened Sarnies in 2011 under the right conditions – rising interest in boutique establishments and good rent for a shophouse. Ever since, it has grown into one of the local must-go restaurants. In their words, “grass fed beef; chicken free from hormones and antibiotics; bacon cured in-house – all so that you’re guaranteed a fantastic meal every time.” Now Sarnies has expanded regionally and reached Bangkok to join the vibrant Creative District in Bang Rak.
Sarnies Bangkok is housed in a 150-year-old boat repair shophouse in a small alley next to Shangri-La Hotel, Bangkok. Previously unused, the elegantly decaying building was restored just enough to preserve the charm of bygone eras and outfitted with modern comforts to cater to urbanites. Exposed concrete and bricks contrast the contemporary furnishings to create a unique atmosphere that beckons one to sit for a while. Tropical plants accent the ground floor and provide verdant visuals that’s easy on the eyes.
The word ‘Sarnies’ is a slang for sandwich, but Sarnies Bangkok serves more than that. Their expanding menu includes “hearty breakfasts, gourmet sandwiches, massive salads, homemade bakery treats and a damn good cuppa.” Dishes like the acai bowl, smoked salmon served two ways, brownies, and bacon and egg sandwich are all not only delicious, but also beautiful to look at. Sarnies has also gradually become known for serving some of the best coffees by adopting the seed-to-cup approach. Quality beans are sought after by the team and carefully prepared by their Phrom Phong roastery before being made into your favorite form of coffee.
